Oh, the Things I've Seen!

It's been an interesting few days. At state court, I've met my first meth addict, saw a guy try to convince entire court's staff that he could defend himself in a marijuana possession case, helped another guy NOT get his bond forfeited and watched my judge deliver a few choice words to an unprepared ADA for the first setting of a 2005 case. At the federal public defender's office, I've finally gotten my federal ID, watched a bank robber plead guilty after he ripped off a bank to pay off the furniture he bought for his apartment, visited the trailer that this article refers to, and met a "reformed" cocaine dealer. (That was in quotes for a reason, yes, but I'm not completely convinced he isn't reformed either. It was a short meeting.)

I've also been sitting around at both jobs watching my billionth DWI plea or reading my billionth case file about the latest drug dealer the DEA caught because the dealer was being (shock!) a moron. But, all in all, they're good jobs. Now only if I could get my parking pass for the courthouse...

Oh! And before I forget, let's have a little talk about MANNERS, shall we? You may or may not know me, but you should pretty much assume that everyone you meet is happy in their life. If you insult any major portion of that life, be prepared to be hated. Even if it's a suppressed, secret hatred. If you're incredibly rude to someone in the first few minutes of their acquaintance, you can bet that you've burned that bridge even before you had a blueprint. An illustration (yes, this happened to me yesterday):

Ann (the court coordinator): Oh, Defense Lawyer, have you met Sarah? She's the judge's intern for a few weeks.
Defense Lawyer: Hi! Nice to meet you. Are you a law student?
Me: Yeah, I just finished my first year.
DL: At SMU?
Me: No, Baylor.
DL: Ah, Baylor... where they teach you to pass the bar, but not how to be an attorney.
Me: *shocked, momentary stare* Um... well, we did have 100% pass rate on the February bar.
DL: *continuing to be happy and such, either trying to skate past his horrible insult 2 seconds after meeting me or being truly so stupid that he didn't realize that it was an insult* Yeah, I read about that!

I narrowly avoided asking him if he wanted to critique my appearance while he was at it. Obviously, the man had no boundaries.

Next time respond with, "Oh you went to SMU? So you didn't learn how to be a lawyer OR pass the bar."

Prof. Property! That's so much more vicious than I would have expected from you!

... I love it. :)

A professor blogging with students, how professional!

Yee said...

Do I detect sarcasm, anonymous? Did we learn nothing from my little tale of not being a jerk right off the bat? I suppose not.

I'm sorry you don't go to a school where the students and professors have good relationships and where conversation, silly or not, can flow freely. Pity, pity.

I was going to delete your painfully bad attempt at being witty (because... well, it's just painful), but I decided that mocking you was much more entertaining. For me. It's what I do. Cheers!

Maybe you should study, then BU could possibly raise its rank into the top 50.

Yee said...

Another anonymous! Or is it the same one? Questions, questions. I'm inclined to say it's the same one because it's the same sort of pathetic attempt at a humorous insult.

If your school is in the top 50 - congratulations! You have NOTHING to do with it. You, my friend, probably will lower its entire reputation because everytime someone asks "where do you go?" and you have that repellant personality, they will immediately lower that school in their own eyes.

That said, I care nothing for rankings. I adore Baylor. And yes, I study. Good grief. The more I think about your comment, the more moronic it is.

And before I get yet another "anonymous" with another attempt to insult me, I should say that you're not irritating me. I'm amused. You're only giving me the opportunity to sharpen my claws on your cowardly flesh.

Personally, I think it's awesome that Baylor students can blog with their professors, not study, and still dominate the Bar.

UT----------------Enough Said!

*stares blankly* I went to UT as an undergrad. Do you expect me to reply nastily to any comment about my cherished Longhorns? I hold UT and Baylor both in high and equal regard, for different reasons.

Anonymous said...

Sorry you could not get in!

Since when does going to Baylor mean you couldn't get in anywhere else? I actually had a choice in law schools, and I didn't just fall to my knees, thanking God that I managed to sneak past the admissions committee and get into UT, as you apparently did. Carefully thought out, pros and cons weighing decisions > OMG US NEWS!! thoughtless decisions.

P.S.: You should really only brag about something if it's the greatest accomplishment you ever hope to achieve. Congrats on getting into UT - it must be *really* special for you, since you're *still* bragging about it (seriously - I "got in" to law schools in 2005 - live in the now. Wanna tell us that you were in the "gold star" reading group in 4th grade? Were you potty trained at 1?). I, however, haven't actually passed the pinnacle of my success at age 21 - I'll be doing greater things.

P.P.S.: You may not have realized this yet, but just *going* to a school means squat - employers won't scrape the bottom of UT's barrel just because your diploma is orange.

My Dearest Yee:
Are we lunching next week? I can't on Tuesday (I'll be at a different court in the morning and probably won't get downtown until 1:00 or 1:30), but I think I'm good any other day you mentioned. We can meet somewhere in the west end if you want, or somewhere closer to where you are. I'm fine with whatever, just let me know!

ALV,

Couldn't have said it better myself. I feel no need to add anything for anonymous's sake.

I'll call tomorrow afternoon and we'll talk about lunch!

Wow... such vicious blogging on the part of all! I also attend UT and I'd like to apologize for my peer. Just remember that assholes and idiots run amuck throughout the law school world and that this individual reflects poorly on our school. We're all attending TX schools and most of us are going to pracitice in TX. No need to put future-potential colleagues down.

Yee said...

I don't hold grudges against entire schools for the actions of one student. Like I said, I have only the highest regard for UT and in my 3 years there I met more good, kind people than almost anywhere else in my life, and I met only a handful of idiots.

At the beginning, I was amused but at the end, I was bored. Trolls need to do better than that to truly raise my ire.

Anonymous said...

Just out of curiosity, what law schools did you get into?

Yee said...

I didn't apply to very many... I was still unsure if I wanted to go to law school so soon (I knew I wanted to go in other words, but wasn't sure if I should wait another year). From what I remember, I got into Baylor, UH and SMU... I think William & Mary put me on their waitlist, but I immediately told them no and let someone else have that spot because applying to a Virginia school was just a whim.

O Yee of great admiration for Queen--what's a good greatest hits-type album that has Bohemian Rhapsody on it?

Yee said...

Queen actually put out 3 greatest hits albums themselves (instead of anyone else doing it for them, that is). Bohemian Rhapsody is on the first one. But the second one has awesome songs like Who Wants to Live Forever, Under Pressure (with another favorite of mine - David Bowie) and The Show Must Go On (redone in Moulin Rouge, which is good but far inferior to the original, of course).

Greatest Hits III is okay. It has stuff that's really only of interest to die-hard fans like a few solo remixed tracks and a newish version of Under Pressure.

That's probably way more than you were looking for. :)

ok.. I don't know if anyone else noticed this glaring irony: (I mean hey, I go to Baylor Law too, so maybe Im retarded) but for claiming we dont study.. and you do... how is it that you have time to form an alter ego of "the ghost" and repeatedly comment on a random baylor blog... well, if nothing else, at least we have social lives. My god. Go back to your videogames and chess-club.

PS--- we all look forward to slaughtering you in a courtroom. Hope your legal theory that ups your ranking helps you there. ;)

pps--- professor property, screw that guy. Aparently blackacre sales fester into hate at UT;)
